Local Pride Initiative Hits The Streets

January 14, 2002 12:00 AM

Liberal Democrat plans for getting the council to help people take pride in their local streets received a boost on 9 Jan, when the Executive Committee meeting sees the further development of their Streetwatch initiative.

The Streetwatch programme is a joint effort between the council and local residents to keep Bedford Borough clean and attractive. Groups or individuals who want to participate in the programme will select an area for which they will be responsible. Based upon the Homewatch concept, those taking regular action in their area will be recognised through the erection of a sign in honour of their hard work, as well as an annual volunteers dinner. The Council will provide materials and support for volunteers.

Michael Headley, Liberal Democrat group leader, said:

"The Streetwatch programme is an excellent opportunity for people to get behind their local area and really make a difference. It will allow individuals and businesses to express pride in the area in which they live and work as well as ensuring the council helps to maintain a safe and clean environment. By working together local residents and the council can do so much more. It's important that the council continues to do it's bit as well as giving extra help for these volunteers. We know from Homewatch that people want to take care of their area, this new Streetwatch initiative will give local people who want it more power to influence the state of their local environment."

The scheme will be part of the Pride in Bedford Campaign and as such will continue to increase local involvement in the local community.
