Weekly Waste Collections to be Binned

January 16, 2004 4:03 PM

Wheely BinLib Dems have condemned the plans that will see the boroughs weekly rubbish collection dropped in favour of a fortnightly collection.

The plans which form part of Mayor Frank Branstons budget suggest the fortnightly collection of regular household waste alternating with a fortnightly collection of recycled and green waste will be introduced in October of this year. This announcement comes in spite of the fact that the council is about to go out to consultation with local residents to consider a number of options for rubbish collection in the borough. Many people have already expressed concerns that a fortnightly collection could have serious health implications especially over the hot summer months.

Speaking on the issue, Christine McHugh, Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson, said:

"Changing to a fortnightly collection of wheelie bins is a huge mistake. This is a most basic service residents expect and they will be outraged that the Mayor has decided to bring this in without debate. Increasing recycling should not be at the expense of key services."

"The Mayor continues to protect luxuries whilst cutting our frontline services. Last year he stopped free drain clearing and bulky waste collections, this year it's wheelie bins. But the mayor can always find money to refurbish his offices or stick propaganda on buses."

The Mayors Budget is due to be discussed at next Wednesday's Executive meeting.
