Winning Night For Borough Lib Dems

May 5, 2006 2:35 PM
2006 Bedford Borough Election Winners

Councillors Nick Charsley, Shirley McKay, Henry Rogers and Michael Headley After their Successful Elections

Liberal Democrats emerged clear winners after last nights Borough Council elections.

Gains from both the Conservatives and Better Bedford means that the Liberal Democrats made the most gains. Lib Dems held seats in Kingsbrook, Putnoe and Wootton and gained seats in Goldington and Harrold.

Speaking after the results had been announced, Lib Dem Group leader Michael Headley said:

"It was a great night for local Lib Dems. We've gained seats from the both the Tories in Harrold and Better Bedford in Goldington. Added to that we held all our existing seats, unlike all of the other parties. Support for Lib Dems crosses all borders with councillors elected in rural and urban wards, both north and south of the river. With Labour, Tories and Better Bedford all losing seats we were the real winners on the night. This will give us great momentum heading towards the Mayoral election next year. Last time around Christine McHugh took second place, on the back of these results we will be fighting for a win next time round."
