Bedford Lib Dems believe the Government must be urged to scrap plans for the development of more nuclear power stations and instead focus on energy conservation, microgeneration and renewable technologies
Commenting on the Labour Group's call for Bedford Borough Council to re-affirm its opposition to the dumping of nuclear waste in the same week that the Labour Government gave the go-ahead for a new wave of nuclear power stations in the UK, Liberal Democrat Group Leader Michael Headley said:
"Of course it is right to oppose any nuclear waste disposal within Bedford Borough. It must also be correct, then, to oppose the government's development of further nuclear power stations which will create more and more nuclear waste in need of disposal. It is hypocritical to be against the dumping of nuclear waste at the same time as wanting further nuclear power stations. The waste that is produced has to be disposed of somewhere, whether it is in Bedford or another area.
We must instead urge the government to give greater attention to energy conservation, microgeneration and renewable technologies."
