Councillor Sawyer seeks to ease difficult crossings for disabled residents

August 10, 2010 1:28 PM

Councillor David Sawyer, Liberal Democrat De Parys Ward, is campaigning to improve the crossings in a number of streets throughout De Parys for disabled residents in the area. Three of the busiest junctions in the area are on Park Avenue as it meets St Augustine's Road, St Andrew's Road and Pemberley Avenue and they don't yet have dropped kerbs for people who have difficulty with mobility.

Cllr Sawyer said, "These pavements are used by people visiting the town centre and Bedford Park as well as local residents. There are residential and care homes in the area and a Doctors' surgery. Whether it's wheelchair users or parents with pushchairs the safety of pedestrians crossing these roads is important."

Cllr Sawyer has asked Highways Officers at the Council to investigate installing dropped kerbs at the junctions and improving road safety along Park Avenue. He concluded, "The existing kerbs are sometimes difficult to use and the dropped kerbs don't always face each other. Residents shouldn't have to venture into the road and then struggle to find safe access back onto the pavement at the other side."
