Bike Week 2020 Round-Up

June 14, 2020 5:34 PM

Cllr Hilde Hendrickx and Cllr Jake Sampson cyclingBike Week concludes today, after a week in which the tremendous benefits of cycling were promoted both locally and across the country.

Bike week organisers, who due to the pandemic had to change plans and hold virtual rather than in-person events through the week, have been promoting the many good reasons to get on your bike and cycle, including:

  • Cycling to work can mean you have a 45% lower risk of developing cancer, and a 46% lower risk of cardiovascular disease
  • If you cycle regularly in adulthood, you will enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger
  • If all cycle journeys increased from the current level of 2% to 25% by 2050, the collective benefit would be £248bn

You can get the facts and figures on cycling from the We Are Cycling campaign here.

Just a few days before Bike Week, Bedford Borough Council announced yet more measures to support cyclists locally, with four new cycle lanes on key routes in Bedford. You can read more on the announcement here.

De Parys Liberal Democrats welcomed Bike Week with a recap of some of Cllr David Sawyer and Cllr Henry Vann's work on cycling - you can find it on Facebook here.

Finally, Newnham Liberal Democrat Cllrs Hilde Hendrickx and Jake Sampson, pictured, are working to support cycling in their ward, with a new scheme funded through their Ward Fund to open up new routes for cyclists. You can read more on the plans here.
