Bedford to get Electric Rail Link to Oxford

1 Mar 2013

The government has agreed to opening the Bedford to Oxford rail line after years of lobbying by local Liberal Democrats alongside many councils and campaigners along the route.

Cllr Tim Hill (seen with Mayor Dave Hodgson at Stewartby station on the rail line due for upgrading) said "This is terrific news for Bedford Borough. It will strengthen Bedford's position on the rail map and lead to greater investment in our Borough. We want Bedford Borough to be a great choice for new and expanding businesses and therefor create more jobs for local people."

"The added bonus is that this route will now also be electrified and could mean trains extending further beyond oxford. it will link in with electrification, also recently announced, of the Midland Mainline north of Bedford. This is all fantastic investment in our Borough from the government. The next stage is to get the Oxford to Bedford route extended to Cambridge and we are working hard on getting government support for this."
