COUNCIL MOT TESTING OFFERS PEACE OF MIND AND HELPS TOWARDS COUNCIL TAX FREEZE
Motorists in Bedford Borough are being offered the chance to get their MOT certificate without the fear of unnecessary repairs as well as helping to freeze council tax.
The Council's Vehicle Repair Depot maintains and repairs most of the Council vehicles, from small courier vans to refuse freighters. However, not only is it experienced in this type of work it also offers to provide independent MOT tests for private vehicles belonging to members of the public. The only difference from a standard garage is that it does not carry out repairs.
The MOT offered is the same as those offered by private garages and is legally binding. Cars more than 3 years old must get a new MOT every year and it is the owner's responsibility to ensure that their certificate does not expire.
Councillor Charles Royden, Liberal Democrat Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Transport, said: "Given the current economic climate, it is right we seek to maximise all our possible sources of income. If that means we can offer a vital service to local taxpayers at the same time then it is something worth shouting about.
"Councils can get a bad reputation for not being business minded but this service shows that we are keen to maximise our business potential and help motorists keep their cars on the road and in a safe condition.
"The vast majority of private garages do an excellent job but some motorists have already told us they feel more comfortable bringing their car to us as the local authority, this gives motorists a sense of reassurance.
"An MOT from us is exactly the same as one from a private garage and is something certainly worth considering for drivers needing an MOT in the future."
MOT's cost £45 per vehicle, while goods vehicles between 3,000 and 3,500kg cost £47.
The Council's Vehicle Repair Unit provides testing for Bedford Borough Council fleet vehicles as well as taxi's and private hire vehicles. The service is also offered to Central Bedfordshire Council vehicles. Some companies also use the facilities for vehicles which are too large for their own units.
