This week, the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, is going on duty with the School Crossing Patrol Service in Bedford Borough.

Following a recent successful 'Stop Means Stop' campaign, in which motorists were reminded of their duty to stop when requested to do so by a School Crossing Patrol, Dave Hodgson has decided to find out what its like 'on the road' for himself!

The Mayor, Dave Hodgson, said: "The School Crossing Patrol Service operates to help keep children safe, and motorists should be aware that Crossing Patrols have the same legal authority to stop traffic at their designated sites as police officers. This opportunity to go on duty at a number of sites will allow me to find out for myself what it's like 'facing the traffic' and dealing with motorists and pedestrians, in all weather conditions."

Failure to stop when requested to do so by a School Crossing Patrol can result in a minimum of 3 points on your licence / a fine of up to £1,000, or both.

In contrast to a number of other authorities around the country, Bedford Borough Council has retained its school crossing patrols due to their important role in keeping children safe at crossing points near schools.

The Mayor will be accompanying current School Crossing Patrols on Thursday and Friday this week.
