Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats increased their number of council seats to 16 as they won the Brickhill ward election from the Conservatives. Charles Royden won the seat by almost 600 votes from the nearest challenger, on a night when the Lib Dems also won all 6 seats they were defending.

In addition to the stunning success in Brickhill, the Lib Dems also topped the poll in Kingsbrook, Putnoe (2 seats), De Parys, Goldington and Wootton.

Councillors Anita Gerard (Kingsbrook), David Sawyer (De Parys), Myrtle Stewardson (Putnoe) and Paul Smith (Goldington) were re-elected, while Sallyanne Smith (Putnoe) and Tim Hill (Wootton) join the Council along with Cllr Royden.

Frank Branston was re-elected as Mayor, in a result finally announced in the early hours of Saturday morning. The Mayoral election result was as follows:
