More rural businesses in Bedford Borough are set to benefit from extra financial help as the Council has amended the policy regarding rural rate relief.

Rural rate relief provides a financial boost to small rural businesses who may be struggling to meet their rate payments. Many of these businesses provide a vital service in rural areas, especially for local residents who are less able to travel to other businesses further away.

Previous to this decision, small rural businesses were only entitled to funding of 50% of their business rates, whilst similar sized businesses in urban areas could receive funding for 100% of their business rates. This amendment eliminates that inaccuracy and ensures small rural businesses receive the same help and support as small businesses in urban areas.

Cllr Michael Headley, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Asset Management, said: "We are now going beyond the government requirements and going the extra mile to help small rural businesses, many of which are the lifeblood of their local community.

"We understand that times are difficult for some local businesses and we are determined to help them as much as possible. I am confident these new efforts will help us to do that."

This amendment applies to the period 1st October 2010 to 31st March 2011. The possibility of an extension to the amendment will be considered as part of the budget proposals for 2010/11.

For enquiries about small business or rural rate relief businesses contact the Council on 01234 221659 or by e-mail to localtax@bedford.gov.uk.

This is an Executive Decision, taken by the Portfolio Holder for Finance, and as such is subject to a 10-day call in period, ending on 17th November 2010.
