Lib Dems Vow to Fight on as Borough Council Backs Incinerator Plans

8 Oct 2008

Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have slammed last night's decision of Bedford Borough Council to proceed with the project to build a giant incinerator near Stewartby. The plans will now be submitted to the Government with the support of Bedford Borough Council. The decision was made in spite of forceful opposition from the Liberal Democrats on the Council's Implementation Executive, who set out the key reasons why they believe the project must not go ahead.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Implementation Executive Member Cllr Michael Headley said: "We are extremely disappointed that the Borough Council has now thrown its weight behind these flawed plans for a giant incinerator near Stewartby. We have identified the key reasons why the project must not go ahead, including the fact that the incinerator is simply the wrong option environmentally. We can, and we must, do better for the local and wider environment."

"I hope that this decision is not one that we regret in years to come, when a giant incinerator could be in operation burning waste that should be sorted and recycled. We will continue to fight this battle, and will go on pressing the case for a superior technology to be used to deal with local waste."
