Lib Dem Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson officially unveiled the first average speed cameras in Bedford Borough, following his Speed Limit Review which has seen speed limits across the borough lowered, especially in rural areas.

He said: "Speeding is one of the most common causes for concern among residents in the borough, both in urban and rural areas and that is why I have committed to introducing these 'Safe Zone' cameras.

"Every year there are about 400 road accidents on the Boroughs roads, and either excessive speed or inappropriate speed is believed to be a contributory factor in a significant proportion of these accidents.

"Installing average speed cameras will encourage drivers to stick to the speed limit throughout the Safe Zone instead of just slowing down when they see a camera approaching. This will make our roads safer for all."
