Tories Slammed for Hypocrisy over Mobile CCTV
Conservative Councillors have been attacked for their 'breathtaking hypocrisy' after claiming to be supporters of mobile CCTV units, despite having voted to block their use at every opportunity. The cameras, which allow a better-targeted, more effective approach to improving community safety than blanket CCTV coverage were finally introduced in Bedford Borough last year following years of Liberal Democrat pressure.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Brickhill Ward Charles Royden said:
"Local communities across Bedford Borough could have been benefiting from mobile CCTV for several years were it not for Conservative Councillors' repeated votes against Lib Dem proposals for its introduction. How hypocritical it is, then, that Conservatives are claiming to be supportive of mobile CCTV, when they have voted to block it at every opportunity they have had.'
"Mobile CCTV offers a better-targeted and more intelligent approach to improving the safety of our communities. It is far more effective than blanket CCTV coverage, which can be wasteful and intrusive. Residents in Brickhill have already benefited from a mobile CCTV unit installed to help tackle problems in the Dearne Walk area, while other units have been in operation at locations elsewhere. This is all in spite of the efforts of local Conservatives, whose hypocrisy really is breathtaking."
