Allotments Open Day

Dave Hodgson awarding a certificate at Mile Road Allotments Open Day
The award for the winner of the most ingenious allotment idea!

On Saturday I was invited to Mile Road allotments to help judge some prizes! Although I am sometimes known tongue-in-cheek as "Farmer Dave" due to my relatively late conversion to gardening, I will admit I'm no expert, but I did my best. I'd give prizes to everyone who has the energy and "stick-at-it-ability" to tend an allotment but apparently that wasn't allowed.

Mile Road Allotments have had a challenging year since the Council plan to develop half the site for houses and industry. Following a huge outcry the Council say they will withdraw the plans and they have started working with the allotment holders to improve the site, expand the available allotments and support the tenants becoming self-governing.

Allotments are great for keeping fit, eating healthily, reducing food miles and generating a sense of community so all the best to Mile Road Allotments.
