Battery Recycling Collection Now Available to All

Battery recycling from the kerbside is now available to all households, with the final addresses in the 'roll out' having had their battery recycling bag delivered recently. Residents can simply fill their battery bag with used batteries, seal it and leave it on top of the black refuse bin or sacks on the normal day of collection. Battery bags will then be collected and replaced by the collection crews. I'm really pleased that this is now available to all, as I know from talking to residents that people want to recycle more and will take opportunities given to them to do so. That's why we're working to make it as easy as possible to recycle.
The simplicity of the single orange recycling bin system, which minimises any sorting of waste, helps in this task, as do any moves we are able to make to expand the scheme.
You can now recycle a vast range of household items through the orange bin collections, and we will continue to look to expand the range of materials included in the scheme even further. Some councils have taken the view that people should be forced into recycling, with fortnightly collections and punitive measures, for example. However, the only sustainable, fair way to drive up recycling, save taxpayers' money and protect our environment is to work with households to boost our recycling rates, and that's what we are committed to doing.
If you haven't received your battery recycling bag, or for more information about the battery recycling scheme, you can contact the Council on 01234 267422 or email: recycling@bedford.gov.uk.
