Bedford Borough Council urges residents to not use barbecues or light fires in public spaces

16 Jun 2023

The summer has arrived and more and more residents are enjoying the beautiful green spaces across Bedford Borough. Bedford Borough Council is urging everyone to be mindful of the risks associated with lighting barbecues or fires in public spaces such as Priory Country Park and other local parks and green spaces.

The recent dry spell, combined with the presence of dry vegetation, has significantly increased the risk of fire outbreaks. Bedford Borough Council is committed to the safety and preservation of parks and green spaces, ensuring they remain a haven for residents and wildlife alike. The Council would like to remind people that lighting barbecues or fires in Bedford Borough parks is not allowed.

The Council encourages residents to consider alternative ways to enjoy the parks safely, especially when meeting in large groups. Picnics, sports activities, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk are all welcome. By avoiding the use of open fires or barbecues, we can collectively reduce the risk of fire incidents and protect the wildlife within our parks.

The Council is actively working on implementing additional measures, such as regular patrols by park rangers to engage with users and raise awareness about fire safety.

Residents are being asked to report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999. By working together, we can preserve the natural beauty of our green spaces and ensure the safety of our community.
