Bedford Borough Council wins funding to improve walking and cycling routes
The government have announced that Bedford Borough Council has won funding for cycling and walking schemes to help promote healthy travel, reduce emissions and congestion. The successful bid was put together earlier this year after hard work from officers and Dave Hodgson's Executive.
Former Portfolio Holder for Environment, Councillor Charles Royden said "This is fantastic news for the whole Borough. Whilst running the Council we invested more than ever before in cycling and walking routes. Winning this funding means the Council can make our roads safer, making cycling and walking more attractive which improves health, is better for the planet and reduces congestion.
"I would like to thank officers for their hard work in producing this successful bid and I hope the current administration continues our commitment to cycling and walking improvements."
The government stated that the winning projects have demonstrated they provide people with attractive choices to use cycling and walking for local journeys, and do not include any low traffic neighbourhood schemes. The winning bid from the Council includes a new cycle lane and safer crossing measures on Dame Alice Street.
