Bedford High Street Amongst Locations to Benefit from Additional £1 million Pavements Investment
Work to improve the pavements along Bedford High Street got underway this week as part of the additional £1million investment announced by Mayor Dave Hodgson to improve and repair footways across Bedford Borough.
The additional funding comes on top of the record investment already being made in roads and pavements across the Borough, and is enabling important works in urban and rural locations to take place.
The works on Bedford High Street are seeing improvements and general maintenance repairs carried out along the length of the High Street and will include repaving and the replacement of broken or missing slabs. The new pavement will improve the visual appearance of the High Street and ensure that the footway is safe for public use.
Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "We've invested an additional £1million across the Borough to make sure our pavements are safe for pedestrians and to reduce the need for unplanned repairs. This work is taking place in neighbourhoods and villages across the Borough and, as in this case, in the heart of the Town Centre."
Work is being carried out at night from Sunday to Wednesday, when traffic and pedestrian numbers will be at their lowest, in order to keep disruption to a minimum.
Bedford High Street is a busy road, so the night work is intended to minimise disruption. It is expected that the work will be completed by the end of April.
Bedford High Street is currently undergoing a series of improvements with, in particular, the ongoing heritage-based regeneration project benefitting the area in a wide range of ways. These include the soon-to-be-be-completed project to bring the 15th Century buildings at 1-4 St Paul's Square, which have stood derelict in one of the town centre's most prominent locations for forty years, back into use.
