Bedford's Big Christmas Lights Switch-On event is taking place tonight at 7pm, along The Embankment. This free Christmas event run by Bedford Borough Council will feature a spectacular firework display and the switching-on of the lights, to mark the start of a busy Christmas period in Bedford town centre.

Mayor Dave Hodgson has also announced even more reason to come and enjoy the show and the first night of late-night shopping in town, with free parking from 5.30pm in River Street, Allhallows and Lurke Street Multi Storey Car Parks.

The 'switch on' is a hugely popular, family-orientated event, attracting thousands of people of all ages to line the Embankment and enjoy the spectacle.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "The Christmas Lights Switch-On is always a hugely popular event for all the family. We look forward once again to seeing thousands of people coming together to enjoy the occasion and mark the start of the Christmas season in Bedford in style.'

"This year's switch-on is the first of numerous exciting events in Bedford this festive season. It coincides with the first evening of late-night shopping, so why not kick-start your Christmas shopping before walking along the Embankment from Town Bridge to enjoy the show?'

"It all kicks off from 7pm, so get there early to get a good spot and help welcome Father Christmas to Bedford!"
