Bedfordshire resident Captain Tom Moore has captured the imagination - and the hearts - of millions of people all around the world this week.

He initially aimed to raise £100 for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his Marston Moretaine garden before his 100th birthday.

However, as awareness of his efforts grew support came flooding in from around the world, taking his fundraising total for NHS Charities Together to a breathtaking £23 million this weekend!

Mayor Dave Hodgson called Captain Tom his 'Hero of the Week' in his latest email message, and BBC News have reported today that Bedford ranked in the top 10 in the list of towns and cities for donations to the cause compiled by JustGiving.

Commenting, Mayor Dave said: "It's been amazing to see the incredible amount of money raised for the NHS by Capt Tom and people not just in Bedfordshire, but across the whole country."
