Road Users in Bedford Borough are being reminded of their duty to stop for School Crossing Patrols (SCPs) following six incidents so far this academic year in which drivers have failed to do so. The call comes during 'Road Safety Week' coordinated by national charity Brake, who announced this week that two in five (41%) UK primary school children say they have been hit or nearly hit by a vehicle while on foot or bike.
The Campaign 'STOP MEANS STOP' launched by Bedford Borough Council in conjunction with other local authorities nationally highlights the fact that all SCPs in the Borough are equipped with video cameras and the footage will be used to bring drivers who fail to stop to account.
Cllr Charles Royden, Deputy Mayor & Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, said: "Six cases this year of drivers failing to stop at school crossing patrols is totally unacceptable. It puts children's lives at risk and we are passing video footage to the Police for them to take action against the irresponsible motorists who should be fined for this unacceptable behaviour."
Failure to stop can result in a minimum of 3 points on your licence and/or a fine of up to £1000.
