Commemorating the Outbreak of World War One - Foster Hill Road Cemetery Exhibition and Memorial Service

There are a wide range of events taking place in Bedford borough to mark 100 years since the outbreak of World War One. One of those events is a fascinating exhibition of medals, photographs, letters and other personal items of soldiers who served in the First World War in the Chapel Centre at Foster Hill Road Cemetery in Bedford. Today is the last day to catch it, and the chapel will be open between 12.00 noon and 4pm.

Commenting on the exhibition, which is being held by the Friends of Foster Hill Road Cemetery, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "It is fitting that these items are on display in the Chapel at Foster Hill Road Cemetery, where large number of soldiers who died in the Great War are buried. The friends of Foster Hill Road Cemetery are to be congratulated for enabling this important event to take place and providing this opportunity for further reflection and remembrance of the sacrifices made by so many.'

The items on display provide a fascinating look back into the lives of some of those who served so bravely during World War One."

A service to commemorate the First World War will take place at the cemetery at 2.00 pm on Sunday 3rd August, also organised by the Friends of Foster Hill Road Cemetery. As part of this a Union Jack flag and a Royal British Legion poppy cross will be laid on each of the 142 graves of those who died during the Great War.
