Commemorating the Outbreak of World War One - Lights Out

4 Aug 2014

Today, August 4th, is the 100th anniversary of Britain's declaration of war with Germany, and the series of events to commemorate World War One in Bedford Continues with 'Lights Out'.

Lights Out is a national initiative inviting everyone in the UK to turn off their lights tonight from 10pm until 11pm, leaving on a single light to mark the hour, 100 years ago, that Britain entered World War 1.

Bedford Borough Council is taking part in this shared moment of reflection by turning off the lights in Council buildings, and also by holding a special Lights Out event at The Higgins Bedford. This is intended to allow Bedford Borough Residents who wish to do so to gather to share this very special hour.

Open from 8pm, the Higgins' Lights Out ceremony at 10pm will include a 2 minute silence followed by readings, music and poems. Guests are also invited to contribute to a Lights Out exhibition by writing a letter either to a family member who served in the war, or to the 'unknown soldier'. Letters will be displayed during the evening, which is free and open to all.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "Lights Out offers a very special opportunity to remember those who fought and fell for their Country. I am sure that residents across Bedford Borough will take part in Lights out, and those who wish to come together for this shared moment of reflection are warmly invited to tonight's special event at the Higgins Bedford."
