Liberal Democrat Cllr Sue Abood (Wootton and Kempston Rural) raised the issue of the pavement between Box End and Kempston in Full Council, Wednesday 19th March.
Inaction from the council left the pavement, which is next to a busy 40mph road, overgrown and unsuitable for all users. Despite raising this issue almost a year ago, nothing has been done. The narrowness of the path particularly affected wheelchair users, those in mobility scooters, and those pushing prams. The pavement is busy, being the main route to the popular Box End resort and ‘Corner Five’ restaurant.
Cllr Abood was forced to raise her concerns at Full Council, displaying photographs of the pavement, and promises to begin the work have now finally been secured.
Cllr Abood said “This is a real safety issue, and it shouldn't need to be chased. This is the reality of the Conservative’s cuts in front-line budgets. Thankfully, after raising this issue in the meeting I have been told that the pavement will now be cleared. This is a victory for local residents.”

Notes
Back in April 2024 Cllr Abood asked the council to widen the pavement because vegetation has significantly narrowed the pavement so that in places there is only 30cm/1 foot of clear tarmac to walk on.
A council team assessed the pavement in April 2024 and scraped back the vegetation in a test area along the road and revealed around an additional 45cm/18 inches of pavement tarmac available. As such, a work order was raised back in April 2024 for 970 metres of pavement to be uncovered.
