Conference Supports Help for Beds Police

26 Feb 2001

Michael Headley successfully called on Liberal Democrats throughout the region to support Bedfordshire's Police Force. Michael Headley was addressing the Police debate at the Liberal Democrats Regional Conference on Saturday in St Albans.

Michael Headley said;

"Bedfordshire's Police Force has reduced in size by 88 officers since the last General Election. We have the 3rd smallest force in the Country and there isn't any slack in the system. The problems of high housing costs for officers and the drain to the higher salaries in the Metropolitan Police has to be tackled. The government has already left it too long, but we can't afford to delay any further before we see some action."

The conference supported a range of policies to help Bedfordshire Police and other forces facing similar difficulties. These included introducing paid "retained police officers" and greater local flexibility in salaries and relocation costs.
