Day 1 of COP26 saw a gathering of around 120 leaders who were addressed by young climate activists, indigenous peoples and business leaders from across the globe as they focus on keeping 1.5C within reach. To make this target a possibility, the world needs to secure global net zero by 2050 and halve emissions by 2030.

The Prime Minister announced a funding package, as part of the UK's Clean Green Initiative, to support the rollout of sustainable infrastructure and revolutionary green technology in developing countries. Liberal Democrat Climate Change Spokesperson, Councillor Jake Sampson said that "We welcome this investment, but call on the Prime Minister to not waste this opportunity to work with allies across Europe and the West to force China and others to act to ensure a successful COP26."

The Liberal Democrats announced their 5 Point Green Recovery Plan last year:

  • Green Every Home: we will upgrade insulation in all existing homes by 2030 and require all new homes to be eco-friendly.
  • Save British Countryside: double the UK's natural environment by cleaning up our waterways, restoring peat bogs and planting trees.

  • Clean Air for Kids: Safe walking, cycling and public transport routes to school as part of a £20 billion Clean Air Fund.

  • Transport Revolution: Investing £40 billion in rail, buses, trams and electric vehicles.

  • Green Energy Switch: Britain to get 80% of its electricity from green energy by 2030.
