Council Committee Gets Same Treatment as Residents as Mayor Confirms Garages Demolition

19 Oct 2007

Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have attacked the Mayor's decision to ignore the recommendation of the Council's Scrutiny Committee and confirm the decision to demolish the garages on Bradgate Road, Bedford without investigating other options.

Commenting on the issue, Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Group Deputy Leader and De Parys Ward Councillor David Sawyer said:

"Once again, the Mayor has taken an important decision without even bothering to ask local residents what they think. This secret decision was implemented before it was even published, and now the Mayor has ignored the unanimous vote of the Scrutiny Committee calling on him to investigate the situation properly before reaching his final decision.'

"We are all familiar with this sort of approach from the Mayor by now, but what will happen when the Borough Council becomes a unitary authority? Will the Mayor continue to make secret decisions behind closed doors, for example over the fate of local schools, and tell us about it afterwards?"
