Council invests millions to improve roads

In addition to investments made to take the next step towards carbon zero and enhancing the Borough's local environment, Mayor Dave Hodgson has also announced millions in funding towards three road improvement projects. The new Capital Scheme bids include major works to concrete roads, a new drainage system and resurfacing works.

Commenting on the Capital Bids, Mayor Dave Hodgson said "These projects will make major improvements to parts of our road network. The investment forms part of next year's council Budget that places the needs of residents at the heart of spending decisions. Improving infrastructure and accessibility for residents is vital in driving prosperity across the Borough."

The maintenance work to concrete roads is in relation to two of the most heavily used damaged roads in the Borough: Thurleigh Road, Milton Ernest and Milton Road, Thurleigh. There is also funding for a new drainage system which will provide protection from flooding for Halsey Road, Kempston. The resurfacing works will be on Murdock Road to improve access to the industrial estate. All these projects will directly benefit residents by reducing the impact of damaged roads on vehicles and reducing the likelihood of flooding, saving residents money and time.

Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Environment, Councillor Charles Royden said "This investment will provide much needed improvements to these roads. It is fantastic that the council has been able to fund these projects despite the lack of proper funding by central government. I would like to ask residents to please be patient whilst we complete the works as we try to limit disruption as much as possible."
