Last weekend saw the first COVID-19 marshals take to the streets in Bedford town centre, providing advice and information about how to stay safe and slow the spread of coronavirus locally.

Funding has been provided by the Government to support and encourage the public and businesses to follow coronavirus measures to keep themselves and our communities safe.

The marshals will be working with the public, shops, businesses and partners to provide advice and information about the situation locally and action to take to tackle the virus.

These marshals will identify and support businesses not following the guidelines, and escalate any concerns to Environmental Health, Public Health or the Police where necessary.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said "It's vital that we all do everything we can to keep each other safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19. The new COVID-19 marshals have been set up to help keep our town centre safe, by providing advice and information to members of the public, shops and businesses. Our Environmental Health Team have been out constantly visiting business, providing support, and ensuring that these COVID-19 secure guidelines are being followed, for all of our safety. These marshals will add to that, working with the public and businesses to educate and advise and make our town centre a safe and welcoming place to be."
