Daniel Norton’s Comments Following North East Bedfordshire Election Results
Commenting after the North East Bedfordshire constituency general election result on Friday, Liberal Democrat candidate Daniel Norton said:
"Congratulations to Richard Fuller on his victory, he and the other candidates deserve credit for a well-fought local campaign. Thanks also to all the council staff and police who protect the integrity of our elections.'
"I was happy to have increased my vote share in North East Bedfordshire, but there is no escaping that it was a disappointing night for Liberal Democrats across the country. More than a million extra voters backed us, but our electoral system means that this was not translated into more seats in parliament.'
"I am now very concerned that the new Conservative government will be able to push through legislation vital to securing Britain's place in the world without adequate scrutiny. The withdrawal agreement is only the start of the Brexit process and the Conservatives' post-Brexit plan has been given scant coverage in this election.'
"I, and the Liberal Democrats, will continue to fight nationalism and populism, the threat to our institutions from this government, and will strive to safeguard our open, tolerant society."
