Decades-Long Wait for New Bedford Bus Station Nearly Over as Development Takes Shape

Progress continues apace on the regeneration of the bus station area in Bedford, with the new facility itself now taking shape in front of both visitors' and webcam-viewers' eyes. Images from the camera trained on the development, which update every few minutes during daylight hours, can be found via the link on the Council's bus station webpage, and show the now-installed steel frame and emerging shape of the brand new bus station.

The regeneration project launched by Mayor Dave has already delivered a series of improvements in the bus station area. These include the popular new surface car park, the refurbished and newly-clad multi storey, the brand new toilets and more. A string of additional projects to regenerate the bus station area are now underway, including construction of the bus station building itself.

They also include works to improve 14-28 Allhallows, the parade of shops which back on to the bus station building. These include a replacement roof, new shop fronts and external improvements to complement the new bus station building.

Improvements to the public areas in Greenhill and Thurlow Street (the paved areas by the multi-storey car park and directly opposite) are also underway, with new paving, landscaping, street furniture and underground recycling bins.

Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "We have needed a regenerated bus station area for decades, and it's fantastic to the difference already made by the work under this project so far.

"We now have a string of further phases umderway, including construction of the steel frame of the bus station building itself. It's great to see it taking shape, knowing that the brand new Bedford Bus Station will be a facility we can actually be proud of as a gateway to the town centre."
