Different ways to celebrate Bonfire Night safely

Bedford Borough Council is urging the public to take steps to stay safe this Bonfire Night.

With many organised events cancelled across the country due to coronavirus, emergency services are preparing for a busier night than usual.

The Council is joining Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service in calling on people not to have bonfires in their gardens.

Instead, here are some alternative ideas for ways to celebrate Bonfire Night this year:

• Set up some glow in the dark games like ring toss or bowling using glowsticks
• Make some bonfire cupcakes or the traditional toffee apples to enjoy at home
• Get crafty with the kids making toilet roll fireworks and rockets
• Make some firework inspired food like firework decorated biscuits

Group Commander Stuart Auger said: "We urge the public not to light bonfires in back gardens. Not only is it high risk to spread to sheds, fences and property, but the smoke produced is a threat to the environment and wildlife. Please also consider the health of those shielding and suffering from Coronavirus during this time."

Anyone planning to have a fireworks display at home is asked to do so respectfully and safely. Think of vulnerable neighbours, children and pets in the area, and do not let off fireworks late at night. Always make sure you buy fireworks with a CE mark, don't drink alcohol if you're setting off fireworks, and always follow the instructions for use carefully.

With coronavirus restrictions in place, and the dangers presented by home displays of fireworks, we are asking people to look at alternative ways to celebrate Bonfire Night this year. People are also asked to please think of theirs and their neighbours' pets as fireworks can cause great distress to animals.
