Don’t waste your Halloween Pumpkin

It's been estimated that 14.5million pumpkins will be left uneaten this Halloween, just in the UK.

If you are carving pumpkins with the kids for Halloween, you can also make it into a delicious dinner. The flesh is great in pies or curries, or roast the seeds for a healthy and tasty snack. There is lots of recipe inspiration available online, Love Food Hate Waste have lots of tricks and treats as well as tasty ideas from Hubbub.

You can also compost your pumpkin once the day is over. This means it won't go in your black bin, and it will be great for the garden. If you don't have a compost bin, the Council sells them to residents a subsidised prices to help you get started.

There are other ways to have a green Halloween this year, like making a costume out of what you've got in the wardrobe. Get creative and revamp your everyday clothes, or bring an old costume back from the dead. Hubbub has lots of great tips to DIY your costume this year.

You could also set up a swap with friends or family, to stop your and their old costumes going to waste. It'll save money, time and help the planet.

Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment said "There are lots of ways to have a more sustainable Halloween, from getting creative with your costume, to saving and reusing decorations. Throughout the year there are lots of little switches we can all make to live a little greener and do our part for the planet. There's lots of tips and tricks out there to make this Halloween green."
