Earth Day 2021

Today, April 22nd is Earth Day, and events are taking place around the world in support of climate action.

Here in Bedford Borough, Mayor Dave Hodgson's Executive declared a climate emergency in March 2019, and the Council is working towards a net-zero carbon target by 2030.

Did you know that amongst the array of green measures being pursued, Bedford Borough Council is leading a project to deliver a green energy park at a former landfill site in Elstow?

The Bedford Green Technology & Innovation Park project will deliver low carbon, clean energy generation technologies and encourage others to reduce carbon emissions, adopt innovative technologies and improve air quality.

The proposed development will promote education through the joint working with two universities, local colleges, and promote the wider acceptance of renewable energy technologies. It also provides the Council with the opportunity to generate and supply onsite buildings and local businesses with low carbon, clean energy through the initial solar farm project being constructed on the site. The Council has started works to cap the closed landfill site with clay, with the solar farm project due to be completed early 2022.

Commenting, Cllr Charles Royden said: "This project will provide more jobs for the Borough, promote education and training for businesses and individuals and allow us to generate income through opportunities to supply green electricity to businesses in the area.
