Bedford Borough Council is closing the Royal Engineers Bridge on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 March 2023 while emergency repairs are conducted.

The repairs will replace some of the deck planks that have deteriorated and been damaged over time. The Borough Council has been monitoring the planks and have now flagged them as a safety concern.

The bridge, which is located between The Embankment and Cardington Road, carries pedestrians over the River Great Ouse behind Bedford Girls School.

Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: "We thank residents for their patience while our contractor delivers vital emergency repairs to the Royal Engineers Bridge to make it safe for use once again."

The bridge is expected to reopen by Saturday 11 March 2023.
