20 Feb 2014

Figures published yesterday by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reveal that employment has grown once again.

The number of people in work has risen by 193,000 on the quarter, while the number of women in employment has reached a record high of more than 14m.

More than 30m people are now employed and in the last three months the number of young people in work increased by 49,000.

In the last three months, unemployment fell by 125,000 and the number of young people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance is now 123,100 lower than in May 2010.

In December 2013, total weekly pay increased by 1.1% over the year, up 0.2% on the previous month.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said:

"This recovery wouldn't be happening without the Liberal Democrats in Government. Quarter by quarter, job by job we are rebuilding Britain's economy. Every job created is a family helped and a boost to our economic growth.

"This, combined with the encouraging news on inflation earlier this week, is further convincing evidence that our economic plan is working. Liberal Democrats are building a stronger economy and fairer society. Boosting employment, securing growth and controlling inflation are the only ways to secure living standards for the future."
