Raft Racing at Bedford River Festival

Bedford River Festival is taking place this weekend! This huge, free festival for people of all ages to enjoy takes place across a 105-acre site on Saturday and Sunday. Over 65 local bands and groups are performing over the weekend across a series of stages, while a vast range of activities and entertainment on and off the river will be providing a spectacle like no other.

With Bedford Borough celebrating the 850th anniversary of its Royal Charter, the Heritage Village on Castle Mound will be recreating 11th century Bedford. Events across the weekend include battle re-enactments, weapons demonstrations and storytelling.

You can find out more and download the festival programme - which includes a map, timings and travel information - on the Bedford Corn Exchange website here: www.bedfordcornexchange.co.uk/outdoorevents/index.php

Mayor Dave Hodgson was on site earlier this evening, and commented "it's starting to look a lot like Bedford River Festival" as he posted photos of the site's infrastructure taking shape on his Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/davethemayor

The first Bedford River Festival took place in the summer of 1978, in celebration of the opening of a navigable link from Bedford to the Wash. The biennial event has expanded since then to become the hugely popular festival we know today, drawing in hundreds of thousands of visitors, with this weekend's event set to be bigger than better than ever.
