Fifty Local Groups Collect Tulip Bulbs from Bedford Borough Council

Spring Flowers on The Embankment in Bedford

Following the spring flowering display on the Embankment, the Council hosted a free giveaway of tulip bulbs for local community groups.

Over 40,000 tulip bulbs were planted last autumn. Once the spring seasonal bedding display came to an end, the bulbs were removed so the team could prepare and plant the summer display on the Embankment.

Unfortunately, the Council cannot reuse the bulbs as they would need to be left in the ground for several weeks after flowering which wouldn't be in keeping with Bedford's beautiful Embankment.

So, to prevent them being wasted, the Council organised a giveaway and fifty local groups and organisations collected these bulbs.

Community groups and local organisations included Parish Councils, schools and nurseries, community gardens, temples and churches, residents associations and volunteer groups, among others, from all around the Borough.

Jacquie Waterfield at The Place Theatre said "The Place Theatre is trying to create a more attractive space around the outdoor theatre space, and we felt that this area would be brightened up by the addition of some of the Embankment's lovely tulips! They will help to beautify the approach to the theatre for everyone who visits us."

Mayor Dave Hodgson said "Our Open Spaces Team does such a fantastic job in creating these beautiful displays down the Embankment, enhancing the 'jewel in the crown' of our town. I am really pleased we are able to help spread the beauty of the Embankment flowering display around the Borough, providing these bulbs to local community groups and organisations in this always popular giveaway."
