River levels are rising and flood warnings have been declared for the River Great Ouse. Residents at risk of flooding are being contacted directly and being advised to take measures to keep themselves safe, with widespread flooding expected.

For this purpose, individuals are permitted to go to other people's homes, despite the Tier Four COVID-19 regulations currently in place.

Before evacuating, be sure to turn off gas, water and electricity and move any valuables upstairs. Only take what you need such as medication and any insurance documents.

Leaflets are being delivered to residents by Bedfordshire Police and volunteers with information about how to evacuate safely, what to do before you leave, and what to take with you.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said "The Council and Bedfordshire Police have contacted residents at risk of flooding directly and given advice on action to take. If necessary and for the purposes of fleeing from danger, the Tier Four COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and you are permitted to go to another person's home. Please think carefully and if possible do not go to an older or vulnerable person's home, to keep them safe. Emergency services, volunteers and council officers are on the ground advising residents and providing support to help people evacuate. Follow their instructions and work with us and your communities to keep everyone safe.
