Further Update on St Mary's Street Works

I know how anxious residents and businesses are for the major roadworks to reconstruct St Mary's Street to be completed as soon as possible, so I am pleased to report that work is progressing well. Those who have been using the road heading south will have noticed that the first section has been completed, with the single line of traffic now moved over to the newly reconstructed left hand side of the road (the surface work is not complete here; the whole road will be resurfaced together towards the end of the works period next month.) Work is now underway on the northbound side of the road, which is being excavated.

With work now underway on the northbound side of the road, two-way traffic will be resumed as soon as possible once construction work here is complete. A lane closure will remain in place on the soutbound side while enable kerbing, drainage and footway works are still to be completed.

There are some works which will require a full closure of the road in order to carry out operations safely. Currently 3 full road closures are programmed on Sundays in November (6th, 20th and 27th) to carry out the following:

- works to the Duck Mill Lane Junction

- planing and resurfacing outside the Kings Arms PH and church

- laying the final surface course on St Mary's Street

- installing road markings and traffic loops

While it will be frustrating for the road to be closed altogether on these days, the above are all clearly crucial elements of the overall works, and once they are complete we will have a safe, lasting road for all to use.

The works are obviously weather dependent. Thus far the weather has been relatively good, and let's hope it stays that way. As I'm sure we would all agree, we could certainly do without such delays!
