The route to be taken by the Olympic Torch Relay when it comes to Bedford Borough on July 8th was announced this week, giving local residents the chance to start planning where they will experience the torch relay and cheer on the torchbaearers.

The relay starts on Goldington Road near Goldington Green. From there, the Flame travels down Barkers Lane and past the Bedford International Athletics Stadium. The Flame will then travel along the Embankment, which will give more excellent opportunities for people of all ages to line the route and enjoy celebrating the passing of the Flame through Bedford. It then crosses the Town Bridge and continues along London Roadand Harrowden Road.

The relay then recommences in Cotton End and travels along High Road before leaving the borough.

A much clearer view of the route can be obtained by looking at the full map and timings for the relay locally which can be read via the Borough Council website! See http://www.bedford.gov.uk/council_and_democracy/council_news/london_2012.aspx

The torchbearers really do deserve our support. A number of inspirational people will be taking part in the relay locally, including Katie Campling, who I met when she joined myself and others to mark the announcement of the route. She has done remarkable work, helping her late friend Adrian Sudbury launch an education programme about blood stem cell, blood and organ donation, a programme which is is now run by Anthony Nolan - a charity which provides life-saving blood stem cell transplants. The Olympic Flame relay is one of a number of exciting events happening in Bedford Borough this summer. The Kite Festival and Diamond Jubilee celebrations take place in June. Following that we have the River Festival and the Olympic Live Site at the International Athletics Stadium, another free festival which will feature the action from the Olympic Stadium on the big screen. 2012 really is set to see a great summer in Bedford Borough.
