Government Compost Rules 'Rotten' - Rogerson

16 Dec 2005

Challenging Environment Minister Ben Bradshaw today, Former Bedford Lib Dem and now Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Minister, Dan Rogerson MP, took the Government to task on their failure to provide specific classification for compost.

Demanding a commitment from Mr Bradshaw on when compost would cease to be classified as a waste, Mr Rogerson said:

"It is outrageous that such a valuable resource is being neglected. Compost has the potential to return valuable carbon to the soil, provide new industry opportunities, and also to divert thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill. This could be a winning situation for everybody if DEFRA (the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) brings forward a decision on its classification."
