Green scheme dumping is rubbish!

Bedford needs to see more recycling and waste reduction - that's the view of local Lib Dems. Recent moves by the council to cut key trials of a scheme to encourage recycling of green waste have therefore been met with dismay.

Commenting on plans that will see the green waste recycling scheme halted due to a lack of funding Borough councillor, Christine McHugh Lib Dem Deputy Group leader commented:

It’s vital that the boroughs recycling scheme is maintained and public participation encouraged. We have pushed for the introduction of recycling schemes for some time, the green waste scheme in particular has been tremendously successful. There have been occasions when over 25% of additional green waste has been collected. This is in addition to the orange recycling sacks and other methods of waste recycling! If the scheme is allowed to lapse and is not replaced the borough will fail to hit its recycling targets. This cannot be allowed to happen."

"She added:"

"It is vital that funding is found to extend the scheme. The green waste scheme provides a vital element of the local recycling programme and we will fight to see it continued."
