Henry Vann and Mike Pitt commit to end child detention

Last weekend, the Liberal Democrats became the only political party pledging to end child detention immigration centres.

Whilst meeting voters in Bedford and Kempston, Henry Vann, the party's parliamentary campaigner for Bedford and Kempston said:

"Locking up children is simply wrong, and yet we are the only party to have shown that we are serious on this issue.

"The Labour government must be held to account for the treatment of innocent children, and the potential serious physical and psychological harm that child detention causes"

Mike Pitt, the parliamentary campaigner for North East Bedfordshire spoke at the conference in Birmingham as the motion was passed saying:

"Cases of physical and emotional harm are well documented and well established in such centres. Even HM Inspector of prisons states they can never be suitable places for children."
