Honouring the Windrush Generation on Windrush Day
Today, June 22nd is Windrush Day, a day to honour and celebrate the British Caribbean community and those who travelled to the UK to live after the Second World War.
Liberal Democrat Cllr Patrick Solomon, whose own parents were members of the Windrush generation, won unanimous support for his Windrush motion at a Full Council meeting last year.
Commenting today, Cllr Solomon (Kingsbrook Ward) said : 'The Windrush generation, which included my mother and father, responded to a request from the UK government to help this country rebuild in the post war period. They did that and so much more, making a tremendous contribution to society, to our public services, to the economy and to local communities across the country, including here in Bedford.'
"On Windrush Day, we honour the Windrush Generation and say thank you for their cultural, economic and social influence and contribution. We also stand in solidarity and support with all those who were treated so disgracefully during the Windrush Scandal, just as Bedford Borough Council did when my Windrush Motion won unanimous support. We need to carry forward that spirit of solidarity with those who were so badly let down.'
"Many of our pioneers sadly have passed away, and we have lost many during the Covid-19 pandemic. We will remember their contribution by honouring them now and in the future."
