Ideas for Activities at Home
Liberal Democrat Brickhill Ward Councillor and Executive Member for Adult Services Cllr Wendy Rider has put together some ideas for occupying yourself while we are all staying at home to support each other and protect our NHS.
Cllr Rider writes:
What are you doing to occupy yourself during this period of social distancing and, for many, self- isolation?
Maybe the following suggestions will help you:
Divide your day up to include:-
• A job that needs doing in the house or garden. (all those jobs you have wanted to do but not had the time to do!)
• A leisure activity such as a hobby.
• If able go for a short walk.
• Watch some television or listen to the radio. Perhaps there are series that you have heard others recommend but have wondered how you will ever get the time to watch them? There are lots of free radio programmes available via BBC Sounds and free television programmes on the BBC iPlayer for example, while you may have access to other streaming services.
• If you are on your own, speaking to somebody every day either by telephone or by video-calling services such as facetime (for those with Apple devices), Skype or Zoom
Have you considered doing some of the following activities:
• Taking up a new hobby. If you don't know where to start, you may be surprised by just how much help is available online, and you can begin by entering what you would like to do and searching the internet.
• Jigsaws.
• Knitting.
• Listening to music.
• Crosswords. (You can download free crosswords from a number of sources online).
• Learn a new language. (You can get tuition through a wide range of sources online)
• Experiment with cooking.
• Exercise - there are many exercise classes and routines available for free online. For example, 1980s fitness start the 'Green Goddess' has returned to our screens with her tips on how to keep fit and stay healthy during self-isolation,on BBC Breakfast. Meanwhile, Bedford Borough Council's instructors are running free exercise classes online, and you can find out more about this here.
• Pinterest - This is a social networking site with an app which you can download and use for free, and which has literally thousands of ideas to inspire you whatever your interests are. It has pictures and videos to help you and you can start here.
