International Women in Engineering Day
Today, June 23rd is International Women in Engineering Day, an international awareness campaign intended to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on career opportunities available to girls in the industry.
Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Christine McHugh is a scientist and studied engineering herself, and she's backing the campaign. Commenting, she said: "Engineers are on the front line in tackling the key challenges in the world now and in the future. If you want to help tackle climate change, or the challenges in people's everyday lives around the world, why not look into engineering as a rewarding career in which you can really make a difference?"
National Women in Engineering Day was launched for the first time in the UK on 23 June 2014 by the Women's Engineering Society to celebrate its 95th anniversary. Since that launch in 2014 the day has grown enormously over the subsequent years to the point where it received UNESCO patronage in 2016.
In 2017, National Women in Engineering Day became international for the first time due to the interest and enthusiasm developed by the international audience and participants in the previous years. International Women in Engineering Day was born to enable the celebration of women in engineering to become global.
