Launch of New Canoe Pass and Slalom Facility - Boost for Sporting Activity on the River

Paddlers Enjoying Duckmill Weir in Bedford

We are all rightly proud of the beautiful River Great Ouse in Bedford, but there is one way in particular in which we can make even more of it for the benefit of local residents and visitors. I'm referring to increasing opportunities for more people to actually get on the river themselves and enjoy it for sports and leisure activities. Last year, the Council joined up with the Environment Agency to publish a 'Waterspace Strategy' for Bedford, which focused on how we could really make the most of our fantastic river for the community as a whole. In addition to seeking to introduce more opportunities for leisure boating such as punting or rowing boats, it also looked at improving sporting access to the river, and with that in mind I was delighted to attend the opening of the new Duckmill Weir Canoe Pass and Slalom facility last weekend.

Viking Kayak club has used this weir for many years, producing many fine competitive kayakers and giving lots of children and young people the opportunity to try out what looks to be a very exciting sport (I say it looks like it, because I must admit to never having had a go myself!). Now, however, thanks to a joint project between the Council, Environment Agency and the Viking Club the newly installed pass (a 'stirrup,' I'm told) will improve access to the weir through the safety boom in place there. Meanwhile, having the slalom course in place is a great boost to the club, and London 2012 hopeful and Viking Club member Etienne Stott spoke eloquently about how richly appreciated it will be by those who have spent hours over the years putting up and taking down poles before and after tiring sessions in all conditions!

There's a video from the event, with comments from Etienne, myself and others, available online here: http://vimeo.com/37871679
