Lib Dems Call For Increased Fare Subsidies

5 Sep 2002

"Door to Door concessionary fares must not be allowed to rise above 60 pence" demand local Liberal Democrats.

Liberal Democrats on the Borough Council are heeding calls for North Bedfordshire Community transport not to raise bus fares for its users. Plans announced to attempt to curb the growing financial pressures hitting the charity suggest raising fares to a pound for travellers wishing to make use of the service.

Kingsbrook Liberal Democrat Councillor, Dave Hodgson, commented:

"Door to Door provide an essential service to those unable to use ordinary buses. I am very pleased at their continued popularity, without the service they provide many people would be unable to make vital journeys to hospital, to work or to the shops. Door to Doors passengers are exactly the people who shouldn't be penalised because of its success. I am against any increase but to increase fares to a pound, that's completely unacceptable. Many of its users are already on tight budgets and this will surely increase their problems. The only solution to the funding crisis is for the council to commit itself to provide sufficient support to keep the fare at 60p."
